The founding team brought exactly the kind of experience that makes for a strong business case and exactly the kind of gap that stalls one from ever shipping. One founder came from the car rental industry, with a granular understanding of how tourists move through airports, rental counters, and unfamiliar cities. The other was a seasoned entrepreneur with a track record of building and scaling companies. Between them, they understood the market, the customer, and the commercial opportunity in detail.
What they lacked was any technical foundation to build on. There was no CTO, no system architecture, no engineering team, and no established development process. Compounding the challenge, the problem they needed to solve was far too complex to hand off to a typical contract developer.
Building a consumer mobile app from a blank slate is hard enough on its own. Building one that also has to connect to dozens of parking infrastructure providers, across multiple countries, each running its own API, protocol, or proprietary system with no shared standard, is a different order of problem. It requires someone who can operate at both altitudes: setting technical strategy at the leadership table, and then sitting down to build the integration layer that makes the strategy real.
Where the risk concentrated:
5Blue stepped in as the client's complete technical partner, from architecture through execution. Shlomi Aflalo, 5Blue's CEO, joined the founding team directly as CTO, bringing technical leadership inside the company rather than alongside it. Eran Kroitoru, 5Blue's CTO, led engineering execution with a team of senior engineers drawn from 5Blue's Eastern European network.
Rather than engaging as an external consultant on a scope-of-work basis, 5Blue embedded at the strategic level. Shlomi participates in steering committee decisions, shapes the product roadmap, represents technical considerations in investor and partner conversations, and owns the architectural vision for the platform. This gave the client a genuine CTO function from day one, someone accountable for technical outcomes, not just a vendor delivering against a brief.
Architecture built for scale, not just for speed
The team designed a serverless cloud backend on AWS, built around Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, and Terraform for infrastructure-as-code. The intent from the outset was to build something that could carry the company from a handful of internal testers through to a full public launch without a rebuild. That decision mattered more than it might appear: rebuilding infrastructure mid-flight is one of the most common and most avoidable ways an early-stage company burns runway.
Solving the provider connectivity problem
The hardest part of the client's technical problem was, and remains, connecting tourists to local parking infrastructure that was never built with a unified consumer app in mind. 5Blue engineered a multi-path connectivity approach: pursuing direct API agreements with major parking aggregators covering more than 800 cities across North America and Europe, while simultaneously building a proprietary automation layer as a coverage fallback for markets where a direct API integration was not yet available. This dual-track design meant the client was not blocked waiting on any single provider relationship to close before it could expand coverage.
A consumer-grade mobile experience
The client's app is built in React Native for cross-platform iOS and Android coverage, with full onboarding, vehicle management, parking search and payment flows, booking history, and customer support integration. Every part of that experience was designed for a first-time user: specifically, a tourist who has never opened this app before, is likely unfamiliar with the city, and has no patience for friction.
Project management and delivery discipline
With a non-technical founding team, 5Blue also provided the process scaffolding a first-time technical build usually lacks: sprint planning, backlog management, stakeholder updates, and the pragmatic tradeoff conversations that keep a startup build on track rather than drifting toward an ever-expanding feature list.
The engagement followed a phased process designed to reduce technical risk early, while keeping the founding team involved in every decision that affected the product or the roadmap. Each phase built directly on the output of the one before it, and the cadence was designed so the client always knew what had shipped, what was next, and why.
Phase 1: Embed and Assess
5Blue's CEO joined the founding team as embedded CTO from week one. The first priority was not writing code but understanding the business: the target market, the tourist rental-car corridor the client intended to launch in, the operator side of the marketplace, and the constraints of a seed-stage budget and timeline. This phase produced a shared technical vision the founders could take to investors and partners with confidence.
Phase 2: Architecture and Technology Selection
With the business context established, the engineering team designed the core architecture: a serverless AWS backend, the data model underpinning occupancy and pricing logic, and the infrastructure-as-code approach that would let the platform scale without a rebuild. Technology choices were made against a single test: would this decision still make sense at ten times the current scale, and could a small team maintain it without disproportionate overhead.
Phase 3: Provider Landscape and Integration Strategy
In parallel, the team mapped the parking provider landscape across target markets, city by city, to understand which providers exposed usable APIs, which required manual agreements, and which had no digital interface at all. This research directly shaped the dual-track connectivity strategy: pursuing direct integrations where possible, and designing a proprietary automation layer to cover the gaps. Rather than waiting for full coverage before building, the team designed for incremental expansion from the start.
Phase 4: MVP Build in Iterative Sprints
Engineering work proceeded in structured sprints, with a backlog prioritized jointly by the embedded CTO and the founders. Each sprint delivered a working increment of the mobile app or backend, reviewed against the original scope to guard against the drift that commonly derails first-time technical builds. Stakeholder updates were delivered on a consistent cadence, giving the founders a clear, current picture of progress at all times rather than a black box that only opened at the end.
Phase 5: Internal Testing and Hardening
As core flows came together, the team moved into internal testing: exercising the onboarding, search, booking, and payment paths end to end, and hardening the provider integration layer against the inconsistencies expected from real-world data feeds. This phase also served as a proving ground for the infrastructure, confirming that the serverless architecture behaved as intended under realistic usage patterns before any external users touched the product.
Phase 6: Launch Readiness
The final phase focused on preparing the client for a live-market pilot: finalizing the provider coverage for the initial launch region, confirming payment and support flows were production-ready, and building the operational runbooks the founding team would need to manage a real launch without an embedded technical partner in the room for every decision.
The engagement was designed from the outset to outlast the MVP. The architecture, the provider integration framework, and the delivery process built during this phase are structured to support the client's next stage: expanding provider coverage market by market, scaling the backend to handle live transaction volume, and growing the engineering team as the company moves from pilot to full commercial launch. The embedded CTO model gave the client a technical foundation built by people accountable for its long-term success, not simply its delivery.
